From CrunchGear:

There’s a rumor currently making the rounds suggesting that Apple could release a multitouch keyboard for Apple TV. The Bluetooth keyboard, as the above mock-up shows, looks a lot like the company’s standard issue aluminum keyboard, but with an expanded area on the right side—the multitouch surface.

The multitouch pad would be totally programmable, and would be able to function as anything from a simple number pad to an iPod-like click wheel to a whatever-else-you-have-in-mind. That’s the rumor, at least.

So there you have it. There are some great mock-ups on CrunchGear to check out as well.

So PC World has taken the time to make this list of wonderful people, and let us know why each and every one of them has affected our lives in ways we can barely understand. From Bill Gates to the men behind Google to the men who created the world’s first integrated circuits, these geniuses have shaped our lives and the ripples of their greatness will be felt throughout the 21st century. Check out the list to find out which of these men you owe a debt of gratitude the most.

If you’ve been hanging out on the internet for any extended period of time, you know a thing about open source software. Whether you’re using Pidgin for all your IMing needs or Firefox as an alternative to Internet Explorer, the world of open source has really stepped out from the underground of net-geekdom into the forefront in recent years, so it’s no surprise that the BBC has run a story on open source software.

While it may not be a surprise, it is a very important step for open source. As the internet continues to grow and change, keeping it free must be priority one. Stories like this lend legitimacy to the cause, and are always a very good thing. I recommend this article to anyone who is looking to learn a bit more about open source, but also to anyone who has been with it from the beginning. It’s almost like seeing an old friend get the credit they deserve.

Now that Americans are finally getting with the program and accepting that Global Warming is real (and it only took a blockbuster movie to get them to accept it), we have these findings from NASA about the human contributions to our changing climate. I highly recommend the entire article, as it has some really interesting things to say about climate change in general, what we are doing to contribute to it and what we can do to alter our present collision course with disaster.

From DailyGalaxy:

The team conducted a “joint attribution” study in which they showed, first, that at the global scale, about 90 percent of observed changes in diverse physical and biological systems are consistent with warming. Other driving forces, such as land use change from forest to agriculture, were ruled out as having significant influence on the observed impacts.

Next, the scientists conducted statistical tests and found that the spatial patterns of observed impacts closely match temperature trends across the globe, to a degree beyond what can be attributed to natural variability. So, the team concluded that observed global-scale impacts are very likely due to human-caused warming. So yeah. According to NASA, climate change is all our fault.

Have a nice weekend!

I used to say I believed in aliens. I really did. I would watch Star Wars and Star Trek and read books about the stars. I dreamed of aliens, to the point that I had all the Aliens toys long before my parents would ever entertain the notion of allowing me to watch their movies. I even liked the Predator toys because they looked like they could hold their own against the Aliens (apparently I was not alone in this).

I have dreamed of the day when some large establishment would vindicate my belief in extraterrestrials. The government broadcasts stuff into space, but that’s mostly a “just in case” measure. But now, in their own preventative PC move, the Vatican has declared aliens to be our brothers under God. I love this. The Vatican is hedging their bets about life on other planets. Does it get any better?

In a story about something I’ve known for years, apparently Generation Y is expected to totally change the web (who still calls it that?). The Gen Y-ers are taking over, as has been recently evinced by the grassroots Barack Obama and Ron Paul political campaigns - a charge led mostly by young adults on the web. We are already seeing this everywhere, but apparently the oldies are taking notice now, too.

From ReadWriteWeb:

Gen Y is taking over. The generation of young adults that’s composed of the children of Boomers, Generation Jones, and even some Gen X’ers, is the biggest generation since the Baby Boomers and three times the size of Gen X. As the Boomers fade into retirement and Gen Y takes root in the workplace, we’re going to see some big changes ahead, not just at work, but on the web as a whole.

That is some serious hyperbole right there. I think I need a nap.

What does that mean? Well, if you have Firefox and you’re willing to download their add-on (it’s really cool anyway), it means that you are in for a totally new internet experience. The PMOG gives you points for being on the internet, and you can set traps for other players or go on missions through the blogosphere. It’s like a game you’re already playing, so it doesn’t cost you anything in terms of your very precious time. I don’t totally understand the game yet, but I’m pretty sure I like it a lot.

I’ll let them tell you about it:

PMOG is the Passively Multiplayer Online Game. To play, you’ll need to Get Firefox and Add Our Extension. This game allows you to leave traps or gifts on any web page. You can also take missions across the internet, discovering new content while leveling up.

The bottom line here is that this may be the raddest, dorkiest thing on the internet. I think I’m in love.

In the interest of full disclosure, I think i

This is the sort of story that shouldn’t shock anyone, but is still incredibly important nonetheless. It seems that many Americans are getting rid of their landlines in favor of cellular phone service. While we have definitely seen the writing on the wall for awhile - my university stopped offering long distance service in the dorm rooms because too few students were using the service, for example - this is different.

This is not just young adults and college grads choosing not to set up a land phone in their residences. This is actual American families choosing to do without actual home phone service because they feel all their needs are met by cellular phones. Just as a few year ago it would have been odd to see a phone with a cord in someone’s home, it may soon become strange to see a home phone at all.

It seems only a few years ago that we were all wondering “why would anyone ever want to carry their phone everywhere?” Look at us now.

I don’t know about you, but I love aliens. When I was a kid, I used to harbor ridiculous dreams of becoming an astronaut and shaking hands with Martians. I was way into things like constellations and Star Wars and all of that. Needless to say, I was not the captain of any sports team. I still maintain that I would have made a truly amazing astronaut if my eyes hadn’t failed me.

So imagine my joy about this story claiming we may hear from aliens by 2015.

From Gizmodo:

If all goes well—or very wrong—Earth may receive a message from aliens from the Altair solar system as early as 2015. Japanese astronomers Hisashi Hirabayashi and Masaki Morimoto sent an email there back in 1983, which was lost and has just been re-discovered by the latter at the Nishi-Harima Astronomical Observatory. Hirabayashi says they were drunk at the time…

This is truly amazing. Some drunk Japanese astronomers may have prank-called space 25 years ago. I really hope they get back to us.

Powerset is finally going to give us all a chance to check out their supposed Google-killer. This new search engine alleges that it will totally destroy Google by offering a much smarter and more efficient search model. If this turns out to be true, it would be akin to the moment in 2001: A Space Odyssey where the monkey-man sees the monolith and figures out how to use a bone as a weapon. When Google hit the internet, it created a revolution.

So get excited, because we may be on the verge of yet any such re-imagining of what a search engine can be.

From ABC NEWS:

The public will get its first chance Monday to test a search engine from start-up Powerset that eschews conventional keyword technology and instead is designed to understand the meaning of Web pages.

As such, Powerset’s search engine holds the promise of fundamentally changing people’s expectations for search engines by, in theory, offering a smarter, more efficient experience.

While this is all still just conjecture until we see the finished product, I cannot wait to test this Beta. I haven’t been this excited about a Beta since PMOG (which just went live, but I’ll link that tomorrow).
